The End of an Alton Era!

The passing of Phineas Tobe marks the end of the last link to the beginnings of Camp Alton.

Phineas Tobe, age 96 of Everett on Tuesday, April 3, 2007. Loving husband of the late Mary (Caroselli) Tobe. Loving brother of Mildred Sieckhaus of Sun City, CA and the late Lydia Tobe of Everett. Beloved brother in law of Carl Caroselli of Lake Forest, IL (formerly of Newton). Loving Uncle of Ellen Peter & her husband Bernard of Lake Forest, IL, Susan Caroselli of Mechanicsburg, PA. Great-Uncle of Kyle and Jared Peter. Survived by many "virtual" children from the former Camp Alton in Wolfeboro, NH, where "Phin" was head counselor from 1936 to the 1970s. Mr. Tobe, a graduate of Harvard University, class 1932, was a teacher of Physics in the Boston School System. He achieved the position of Assistant Headmaster-Science at the Girls' Latin School in Dorchester. Mr. Tobe was very involved with many civic organizations such as board member for Boston Aid to the Blind Inc., violinist for the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army in the European theater and was awarded the Purple Heart, after being wounded in France while repairing a tank radio antenna.
