keeping up w/ Peter

in today's Boston Globe:

Rule is music to author's ears
As he approaches each new project, author Peter Guralnick has one rule of thumb. "It's what 'Sister' Rosetta Tharp said: 'Ninety-Nine And a Half Won't Do,' " said Guralnick, whose biographies of Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke are nothing if not definitive. The Newton native who now lives in West Newbury is being honored this weekend at the Newburyport Literary Festival, and a few celebrated scribes are on the guest list, including Andre Dubus III, Anita Diamant, Nelson George, Elvis Mitchell, Julia Glass, Wil Haygood, and Tom Perrotta. What's Guralnick working on? "I think I'm going to start on a portrait of [Sun Records founder] Sam Phillips," he said. "He was a true American genius, and I knew him for over 25 years."
