But I'm not sure it should have been.
In those days we did not appreciate history and had no sense of destiny. So, having us get up and mouth phrases which, even if we read the translation, it could not have had to us the depth of meaning which we now [slowly but slowly] have come to ingest.
I've always been jealous of you younger folk who were afforded more options and had at least a fighting chance to make a meaningful choice.
