Alton today

Post by Walter Weinstein »

Hi, I was a camper for only one year in '64 when I was 12 and Dick Lustgarden, if I remember correctly, was the cabin counselor along with Mouse Merrit, Dennis Krumholtz, David Saulk, & Erik Mishara (dif cabin), surprised I can remember as I was not too into it . I was at Alton for only one season because I was not too happy at Alton and went to Camp Wekeela in Maine for 1962,3,5,6, & 7.

Anyway, one spot at Camp Alton which I remember well was the top of the Point, or Clay Point because I used to go out there to the top of the Point by myself for a half hour or so and look down the Broads of the Lake with the waves rolling in below.

I have been told that on top of the Point there is now a mega-mansion being constructed for the individual by who is the owner of the NH Speedway, home of the Winston Cup and a venue for many large racing events. Also, I heard the the Town of Wolfeboro by referendum and the State of NH legislature did not want to purchase the Camp and build a Park, open to the public, due to lack of money and the loss of property tax if the Camp became a public property. Too bad, what a waste; the big beautifull spot ends up as one rich guy's estate. He previously owned a very nice home in Meredith, on the Lake, but now will not have to drive through all the Meredith traffc on his way to the Track in Loudon.

You know, Lake Winnipesaukee has 280 miles, I think, of shoreline and all of 1/4 mile of this is a State Beach & rv campgroung at Ellacoya State Park in Gilford. The State of NH has been here since 1789 and the current shoreline of the Lake since 1823 when the Lakeport Dam was built and this CHEAP State has 1/4 mile, if that, of shoreline open to the public. The Camp Alton land came on the market and the NH State legislature threw up their 420 State Rep's hand's and said "Oh, we just don't have the money for this right now!" Bloody, cheap, no good property tax system of NH is to blame for this public loss. Excuse me, if I sound pissed about this because I am!

link to newspaper short

Post by Walter Weinstein »

The newspaper link that I really wanted to find was for a story of the NH House of Reps and how in 1999 or so there was no money for creating a State park on Winni. NH never has money for anything. It is the only state in the country which uses a property tax as its major source. NH would rather impose a mean property tax on seniors as their income goes down and their home value goes up and then yell "NO MONEY" when a new item comes along such as funding elementary education or a state park on the State's biggest lake, aka the Big Lake.

Hope this link works...

that nobody use this [sacred] message board to hurt anyone.

I regret that in the recent past I did something to cause someone from camp [whom I do not believe I had ever met] sufficient angst as to take time from his life to express how upset he became with me.

As we approach The New Year and the need for our personal t'shuva [repentence], I again apologize, both to the [I am sure] young man whom I had upset and the rest of you for anything I may have done [including this message] to be hurtful.

Walter,

The story I heard (besides 3 Fingered Willie) was that Peter sold the land to a conservation trust that promised to keep the land as was but before the ink was dry on the agreement, the check was cashed and the land sold to a developer. This was told to me secondhand, so I can not say this is what really happened..but then again I can't say that it is not....well, I guess I could, but it wouldn't be accurate...well maybe it would...

Has anyone ever asked Peter? Maybe this forum would be a great invitation for him to let us all know what really went down. Anyone have his email? I'll be glad to ask!

What went down was that age old perenial problem: MISCOMMUNICATION.

Take it from me. I should have had a PHD in that subject by now.

a PHD or PHB (which would insure that the rec hall bathrooms would not be locked and there would be plenty of gimp in the shop!)
