Where to go now?

Post by Erik mallon »

Hi to all,
Every year at this time I tend to drift closer to Lake W. I also start to share all my great memories to my kids about Alton and how I wish the camp was still around for us to visit. I have 4 kids ranging from 4-11 and I am now searching for camps similar to Camp Alton. I can't seem to find anything like it. I hoping someone can give me some names.

PS....anyone want to open a camp? May not be the smartest business move. Just sold my business and I am looking to create something special. I'm not kidding!!!!!

Erik,

I too dearly miss Alton and wish that it was still around for my kids. I have three boys, ages 13 and twin 10 year olds and they are die-hard athletes. Alton would have been perfect for them. I have sent them for the past 5 years (my older one) and 3 years (my younger ones) to Camp Laurel in Maine. It is a coed camp, and does have electricity in the bunks, but it has a great program for the kids. In speaking with my friends who send their kids off to various camps for the summer, there is NO camp like Alton. We have friends who send their kids to Winaukee (also on Lake Winnepesaukee) as well as Winadu in Massachusetts. Both are fairly strong all boys camps. Another great camp in Maine that 4 of our friends send their boys to is Takajo. All boys, with a strong emphasis on sports. Unfortunately, I don't think that our kids will ever experience color war 24/7 for 8 weeks. The Green and the Gray (GO GRAY!) have been replaced by a few days of color war with no FLAG RUSH or SING anywhere in site. I still have all of my flags in perfect condition in a container in my basement and bring them out to bore my boys every so often. I have to admit that it is a nice kind of quiet in the house when all 3 of my boys get on that plane to fly to Boston for a three hour bus ride up to Maine. Now I understand why my parents sent my sister and I away for the summer. It's a win/win situation all around. I hope that this helps!

A NEW CAMP ALTON???

Good Luck!

Rich

I believe several Altonites moved to Camp Manitou in Maine after camp closed. I know my younger brother did and enjoyed it very much.

Another alternative is Camp Bauercrest in Amesbury, MA. My nephew goes there and loves it. I don't know much more about it, but they have a website.
