It was great to see that photo from the 30's and even greater to see a couple of the forebearers of campers and counselors whom even us "elders" knew [one of whom had been my camper in 1962 - guess who].

But that being said, Ken Warshaw [also a "Markie Babbie"] is similarly 100% correct. Whether controversial or non-controversial, critical or be-decked with acclaim, the authorship of postings should not be obscured.

Camp Alton is an egalitarian society; nobody ought to feel the need to be closeted.

Correct me if I am wrong, but this is a message board about CAMP ALTON. There are plenty of other message boards on the world wide web where one can espouse their political and religious view points.

I agree with 3FW, there should be more alton pics and quite frankly, I am somewhat upset that there have yet to be any posted of myself and/or my close friend 3FW. No one is being closeted, everyone knows who he is, poor little Willy.

For thousands of years jews have enjoyed a good argument. If you don't belive me, come over to my Aunt Sadie's house for Passover sometime. With that said, weren't most of the attendees (and therefore, alumni) of Camp Alton of jewish heritage? Wouldn't it follow logically that either in person or online, several debates arise when we get together? Sometimes those debates are directly about the subject at hand. Occasionally, the debate goes off on a tangent.

Mark Brecker posted something using a biblical reference. I responded and started a debate. What followed from 3FW and now Wheelchair Mary is most certainly NOT in the spirit of Camp Alton. Anonymous (some would argue cowardly) posts telling the rest of us what they feel are appropriate and inappropriate posts on this board; wasn't Alton supposed to value individuality and free-expression?

We come to this board becuase we all have a place in our hearts for Camp Alton. We come here to see the names and the stories of our fellow Altonites. And most importantly, we come here so that that same spirit of individuality and free-expression can live on. Back on the bunkline, you could simply go to the A-Field or the Rec Hall if you didn't like the direction of a conversation. Here on the message board, you can simply move on to the next post.

Ken,

First off, if my short and to-the-point responses seriously offend you, then I apologize, for I do only have three fingers and typing is a real pain in the bum. Having said that, you spelled ?believe? wrong in your opening paragraph and ?because? in your last.

Secondly, I think you stereotyping Jews saying that they enjoy arguing is a little inappropriate and incorrect. Remember ethical discussion for all those "non-Jews" on Friday nights, Ken? Some of those profound discussions involved heated arguments that would have made any O?Reilly Factor show look like cookies-n-cream!

And thirdly, and I quote you:
"We come to this board becuase we all have a place in our hearts for Camp Alton. We come here to see the names and the stories of our fellow Altonites. And most importantly, we come here so that that same spirit of individuality and free-expression can live on."

Ken, are you serious? C?mon, man. That sounded like the chorus to a really bad Anthem for The Sing. This website, which is one of the best things to have happened after the tragedy of camp closing, gives all of us a chance to go down memory lane to a place that was the best thing to have happened to a lot of us, as well as catch up with one another. What it shouldn't be is a forum for political and religious analysis not because it?unimportant, but because it's lame and boring. Yeah, I love logging onto the camp website, clicking on the message board only to see 20 posts from someone who just loves to hear the sound of his own voice giving a six point press release on ?charity?. Yeah, that?s fun, Ken! That's sooooo camp! You don't see me dwelling on the fact that I had my fingers sawed off (on camp grounds, I might add), only to make the woods my home where I lived off of mint leaves and wild mushrooms (which, by the way, are a pain to pick without a thumb) and the ramifications it had on the '68 election, do ya? No. Why? Because who cares. It's not fun. Look, I?ll even extend my other hand (the good one) to you and give you topics that you can write about that fellow Altonites may actually find interesting and, in the theme of the website, have something to do with camp. You were a camper in the 80s, right? What was that like? Or, hey, how about your favorite summer or moment at camp? See where I?m going with this? Happy time times, Ken! Fun times! And, if I can recall correctly, camp had something to do with that idea of ?fun?. Remember? There was also a little thing at camp that was very popular called ? a sense of humor?.

But hey, who am I to talk? I?m just a lonely man with no more window screens to scratch, exercising his individuality and free-expression.

My humble apologies Willie, I never gave you enough credit. You are a very wise man, who truly has the spirit of Alton living inside of him. I will only disagree with you on one point. On rare occasions bringing up politics is appropriate, like now. I would like to start the 3 Fingered Willie for President in 2008 campaign!

Appropriate Message Board Subjects

The so-called "diversions" [be they music, the world series, and, yes, even "politics"] reflect "camp", as does 3 Fingered's somewhat cowardly expression of disdain for the ethereal.

Good natured ribbing characterized almost every day each season. Unfortunately, the out and out gratuitous bad-mouthing our fellow Altonians was also an all too frequent "camp occurrence", but perhaps the only subject that would be, nonetheless, verboten on GARY's website [to which he kindly gives us access].

Time to weigh in, Gary?

Re: Appropriate Message Board Subjects

Personally I really have no problem with a little political discussion now and then..things have been a bit quiet on the board for some time so a little controversy gets the juices flowing...of course I would prefer the topics to be camp related but as long as people aren't personally attacked or slandered - what the hey?

SO does anyone remember what happens when you flushed a tennis ball down the toilet??? I do remember when they had to bring in the "cesspool" company to unclog the old pipes...there was nothing more pleasant then the stench that came from those tanks when they lifted the lid...ohhh how I can picture it now...looking out the back of E2 toward the A-field...the birds chirping, the pines swaying and the crap floating to the surface...

How's that - not too political?

and Gary, as Irving Roberts

would be working on the "mess mixed with cess" and the campees would gather round and make remarks, he always had a great retort. I especially recall:

a camper asking Irving if he would swim in it, to which he replied: "More important....[kid]...if you were swimming in it and I took a rifle a starting shooting at you, would you DUCK under?"

Those were the days and, as they would [politcally] say: "Never Again" [alas]

Forget about fixing the pipes!!!

I remember one year the stuff was bubbling out of the ground a few places in lower camp creating mini-Misssissippi rivers of stinky stuff running down to the lake.

69, 70 somebody knows.

The Jerkin One, blessed be he.

Confession time!

Post by Tony Gillott »

Confession time,
Angelo and Judy Fertitta were bunk parents for M1 & M2 in 1970, and Geoffrey Wolfe (Green M1, where I was counsellor with Mouse) had had a bad time digestively, I returned to M1 after morning swimming lessons to find that the toilet had not been flushed, I thought, "Dam kids" and flushed the toilet, unbeknown to me, Geoffreys underpants, so Judy informed me, were still in the bowl, that is probably what caused the blockage!!
