Altonites in the News II

Post by Michael Kupersmith »

Altonites should take notice that Jonathan Borofsky, Altonite of the 50's, presently has a major exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Rather than ramble on about a subject about which I know next to nothing, let me direct you to the MFA website: <A HREF="http://www.mfa.org/pressroom/news/borof ... ky.html</A>

Jon was a very fine baseball player during his camper days. He covered left field and batted clean-up on the 1958 15 year old baseball team. The closest he got to fine arts was the shop -- which he did frequent occasionally.

Jon's works can occasionally be seen at museum's across the country. (About eight years ago, I visited an exhibit at Dartmouth College). For those of you who live in Seattle, you might be interested to know that the statute outside the Seattle Museum, "Hammering Man" is Borofsky's. (A copy of Hammering Man abides in Frankfurt, Germany as well).

I last saw Jon in NYC in 1970, just before I moved to Vermont. I had dinner with him and his girlfriend at his apartment in Tribeca. He showed me works from his "Alton Period", but as far as I can tell, no example of this period has made it into a museum.

All of Jon's works contain numbers -- he counts continuously as a form of meditation, I think. He started counting with Chief during the 1958 season. And no, Biff Levy, the MFA website does not include information that Jon was a Prize Camper.
