greatest camp misjustice

In an attempt to revive postings on this board, I pose a hopefully thought provoking question: What did you think was the greatest camp misjustice during your stay?

Mine occurred during my senior year when the counselors took away all 15's from the flag rush and attempted to placate us with the camp's first social. There was only one senior flag brought over in the entire rush and I don't believe any romances were kindled during the dance.

What could be more unjust?

Social...what the hell is that? We just lived vicariously through the slightly exaggerated stories from the counselors after nights out! At least we all assumed they were talking BS...each time the story was told the tale got "better"...

Personally - mine was getting short changed my senior year when I did not receive a flag (the only senior I believe). Maybe thats because my senior year I was falsely determined to have been downed by an NOPer during a rush...<STRONG>of course the little bastard tripped me but nobody saw that, they just took me off to jail, but hey I don't hold a grudge it was only 29 years ago, I'm not pissed <BIG> <IMG SRC="frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":("> that I don't have a single flag to show for any of my years at camp, I was probably a trivia question the following years...ohh but I digress..... <IMG SRC="wink.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=";)"> phew, I needed to vent there...it has been bottled up for a long time!!!

I guess all I really remember are the great times I had besides the rush...like EVERYTHING else that we did at camp...

The greatest injustice during my time at Alton was the RIDICULE and SCORN heaped upon Steve Shapiro and Lila Rupp during that "Humongous Jugs" protest speech at the '73 Sing.

As we all sat mortified at attention, hands on our knees, none of us could have known or appreciated the fact that we witnessed the first rumblings of a larger movement we now call "Political Correctness" 20 years before its time.

Steve and Lila, wherever you are, KUDOS!

I recall that sing event and most of what surrounded it quite vividly [for an old man].

Any ridicule and scorn during the protest had to have been imagined. At first everyone [almost] thought it was part of the schtick. Nobody interrupted or said anything while it was being read.

The next aspect of my disagreement is procedural. If every time someone at camp felt something to be untoward they would interrupt or impose their viewpoint, nothing positive would EVER occur and those with the most "moxie" would rule the day. The middle of the camper's sing [as opposed to, say, an article in the Alton Almanac or an assembly announcement - when called upon] was hardly the place to advance one's own particular perhaps parochial bias. [D. Shass of Ardmore very eloquently and competently pointed this out in a reading at Evening Assembly, and only when/after Peter recognized him.]

Substantively - References to a person's body parts was not, in that sing, limited to the female gender. But unlike comments about the latter which rightly or wrongly reflected adulation, the comments referring to the inadeqacies of the "member" of a certain young [and not very secure] j.c. had to be more hurtful than embarrassing. [I only mention this because surely I alone, having had such an empty life, can recall the identity of the poor chap {now probably MOST successful} and therefore am not compounding his potential embarrassment].

Clearly had to be Mark Boyle pinning me down in the middle of the A-field and gently putting blades of grass up me nose.

Or perhaps setting up Jeff "Moe" Dubrow in counselors play @ the chinese restaurant, of course "Ahh Mista Moe". Not sure if thats a misjustice or perhaps one of the best scenes in counselor show history. Peter G. told me the next day it made his top 3 all times scenes.

Yo Richie, you caused a misjustice!!!! I wait 8 years for senior rush, get my one moment of glory by grabbing that "35" just above the track, and you gotta freekin' tackle me from behind about 15 yards short of the line. (OK, so it's not your fault that I was running slower than a damn snail--I still do too!:-)). 15 minutes later, Billy Bachman brings the flag over....the only flag of the day. He got "the schtick", and all I got was an "honorable mention" for it. Dusty's said the reason was that it was a defensive rush... Anyway, it was all your fault !
It's amazing what stupid shit you remember almost 24 years later! Even if I had gotten a flag, my mother probably would have thrown it in the trash.

p.s to Gary...thanks for setting this up. I don't know why I never checked for an Alton site until recently. This is great!

The greatest camp injustice was the 1974 pick day fiasco when victory was stolen away from the grays in an IE c-team softball game. The injustice was further compounded when "earl" failed to receive an invitation from the almighty "peter" to return as a C.I.T. the following year.
