Camp's Final Year
Camp's Final Year
Was 1992 the planned last year of Camp -- or did it just not re-open in surprise to everyone in 93?... I have not seen any references to the closing and final days from that perspective.. I am sure that other Alumnai (like myself) would be interested to know about the last days of Camp (if it were common knowledge)... It seems that the photos from the 90's reflect a very small Camp census. Did Alton just run out of steam?
Would appreciate some thoughts.....

Re: Camp's Final Year
I know many of my Alron friends may want me to not rant about the closing of camp so I will make it brief and censored.
To my knowledge, camp was not planning to close. The basketball courts and Tennis courts were just redone in 1992, so why do that if you are just going to close it.
Peter is a selfish person who didn't want to give up his hold on camp. Whilist many people wanted to take it over, they were left out only to have camp sold for a measly pittance of what it is truly worth economically and spiritually to all of us.
Then there was Dusty...
I left camp early in '92 to go to Israel. To my knowledge, no one had a cluse that the camp was closing, albeit it was a strange ending I heard.
As for the size of camp, Peter didn't recruit, nor did he ask the counselors that continued to come back recruit either. I am sure we could have had a full camp with a little push. But that is history.
Hopefully my dear freind Rob Stone will be opening his Camp soon...

Re: Camp's Final Year
Did anything have to do with Doc's passing away <IMG SRC="frown.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":("> before the Summer of '92 or was he not in the picture anymore at that point?
Always thought it was an interesting coincidence!

I looked at their web site and he is not the director, nor on the board or on any list there.

Re: Camp's Final Year
As usual, Jordy speaks from ignorance instead of knowledge. Ironically, if Peter hadn't decided to run camp after the death of his grandfather people in Jordy's generation wouldn't have had the chance to ever even experience Alton. Camp's closing was tragic and it is upsetting that the owners weren't more interested in keeping camp alive, but if you think camp closed because "Peter is a selfish person" you are sadly mistaken.

Re: Camp's Final Year
Well BIG Dan,
As typical as I am, it is sad to see the blindness of a wannabe "Family" member and Peter's inner baseball and blues circle. Sure, I may not know everything about Camp closing, but without one word from Peter in 10 years, a split of friendships, and yes, his selfishness, it is clear to many people that he and only he decided that camp should not be continued.
You of all people, who was at the "meeting" at the Hill House in 1988, sould see that if there were allegations of alleged abuse then, and nothing was done about it, then there was something wrong. Something wrong with the director and others in charge.
If you are so knowledgeable about everything, why don't you share it with the rest of us. Or maybe ask your dear friend Peter to address this close network of friends. Or do you, in your own selfishnish and power hungry nature, want to hold this knowledge all for yourself and let us continue in this "ignorance... of knowledge..."
My apologies to everyone for the nature of this message, but ignorance is bliss, and to be honest, I'd rather not be in bliss anymore.

Re: Camp's Final Year
Dear old friends,
Please de-escalate this war of words.
We all have feelings about what happened. It is better not to be bitter.
As Dick Gregory said, carrying bitter feelings is like holding a pocket full of dog sh*t to fling at someone.
It's you that ends up bearing the stinky pocket. ;-)

Re: Bauercrest
Bob Stone, has been the Director of Bauercrest for about the last ten years... He was previously Associate Director of Avoda.... There may be a few Bob Stones.... This Bob Stone attended Alton in the 60's... Bob is about 50 years old and he was a camper with my Brother Larry. I see him now and again and can state with absolute certainty -- He is the Director of Bauercrest...

I would tell you all about it, but when I was inducted into Peter's private baseball and blues society, I took an oath of secrecy.

Re: Camp's Final Year
Heh Guys
I have seen the many messages that have been posted about the closing of Camp and even though I stayed at Alton just one year many years ago my experiences of the Camp and all the people there had a big effect on me.
I do not know why the Camp was sold, but if someone came to me and made me an offer, however paltry that figure may seem now, and that offer would ensure that neither my children nor my grand-children would want for anything, then I would have to think very long and hard before I turned it down.
